Review

The book was about the politics, culture and religious beliefs of a place called the Continent, it is full of love. death (murder), mystery and intrigue.

This book was fantastic although at times it was quite heavy going due to the combination of the cultural, political and historical religious basis of the story.

The authors writing style and world building was great and at times made me the reader feel as though I was actually part of the story, which made the story even more intriguing. Shara the main character in the story was a very interesting, well educated, strong willed, gentle and loving person who was able to see things for what they were; and because of this was a character I really felt a connection to.

I will read this book again as well as recommend it to others and buy it as a gift for friends/family who I think will enjoy it which is why I gave the book a 4 star rating.

Review

This book was really great as it gave you background on some of the characters that the reader got to know in the first book (Birthday, “I wandered lonely as a cloud” and Veronica) and the first story in the book introduced the reader to a character that we will meet in one of the books following “The end of all things”.

In the Story entitled Veronica we learned about the background story of the little girl that we are introduced to at the end of the first book while the story entitled “I wander lonely as a cloud” was about Shadowfax (Cloud) the horse that Carly and Justin found in the early stages of their journey.

The story entitled Birthday gave the reader an insight into what life was like for Carly and Justin once they had settled in a house that they found on their travel route when she was pregnant which was very interesting.

While in the first story Horsemen introduced the reader to a character called Pearl who will obviously be in one of the future books in this series and it was very interesting finding out what her life had been like prior to the Infection and in the early stages of the crisis.

The authors writing style and world building in this book is as good as it was in The End of all things is still as good and kept me hooked throughout my reading. I would also read it again as well as reccommend it to others who are reading the series. It is because of all of this that I am giving the book 5 star rating

Bloggingforbooks: Bonita Avenue by Peter Buwalda

Dazzling…Critics hailed Buwalda as ‘The Dutch answer to Jonathan Franzen’, but his  brilliance is entirely unique.”–The Times (UK)

Siem Sigerius is a beloved, brilliant professor of mathematics with a promising future in politics. His  family—including a loving wife, two gorgeous, intelligent stepdaughters and a successful future son-  in-law—and carefully appointed home in the bucolic countryside complete the portrait of a  comfortable, morally upright household. But there are elements of Siem’s past that threaten to upend  the peace and stability that he has achieved, and when he stumbles upon a deception that’s painfully  close to home, things begin to fall apart. A cataclysmic explosion in a fireworks factory, the advent of  internet pornography, and the reappearances of a discarded, dangerous son all play a terrible role in  the spectacular fragmentation of the Sigerius clan.

A riveting portrait of a family in crisis and the ways that even the smallest twists of fate can forever  change our lives, Bonita Avenue is an incendiary, unpredictable debut of relationships torn asunder  by lies, and minds destroyed by madness.

Review

Thank you so much Michael for sending me this book and I loved it because it was a fitting second book in a series.

Michael’s writing and world building in this book was equally as good as in the first book and it really made me feel like I was part of the story. Thanks to this and the fact that I will buy a digital copy of this book to be able to easily re-read as well as buy it & recommend it to others is why I gave it 5 stars.

We learn more about the planet, the other planets in the solar system, the species on Darracia along with the other planets and the main characters in the story.

I particularly enjoyed seeing how the love story between V’sair and Tullani developed even more to the point where near the end they were preparing to get married. It was grate seeing how much they both struggled being away from each other and then how they flourished once they were back together.

It was also interesting seeing what Zayden,V’sair’s older brother, and Staf Nuen V’sair’s uncle who’d left Darracia in the interim between leaving the and returning to the planet.

So in conclusion I absolutely loved this book and will definitely re-read it again on a fairly regular basis.

About the Author

Sally Green was one oof 2014’s debut authors Half Bad being her debut book and the first book in a triloy, published by Penguin in March 2014.

2013 was a whirlwind year for Sally who submitted her manuscript of Half bad to an Agent in the January of that year (and getting accepted by her agent Claire),  and then agreeing a deal with Puffin (UK) and Viking (USA) in March. In April I agreed a film deal with Fox 2000 with Karen Rosenfelt as producer (google her!). Since then Half Bad has been sold to more countries, and I’ve been busy editing Half Bad and have started work on the second book of the trilogy.

Sally lives in north-west England. I love to read, walk in the country and would like to drink less coffee (but I know it’s impossible – I’m an addict)!

Started Reading: The Hawk and Dove, #1 The Hawk and the Dove Trilogy by Penelope Wilcock (netgalley ebook review/

Started: 21/1

Book Information

At the start of the first novel Father Peregrine is appointed Abbot, at the age of 45. Father Peregrine, whose name in religion is Columba, is an arrogant, impatient man, a hawk trying hard to be a dove, whose struggles to manifest the character he considers to be expected of an abbot provide much of the narrative. He is surrounded by a company of flawed, human monks who are – for the most part – also serious about their calling, and who – again for the most part – come to love their driven and hard-driving leader. They lived six centuries ago, yet their struggles are our own—finding our niche; coping with failure; living with impossible people; and discovering that we are the impossible ones.

COMMENTS AND NEXT WEEKS GOALS

Everyone Has Their Little Secrets by Michael Louthern (Paperback, Review copy) – read as part of the #ayearathon read-a-thon and the boutofbooks 12.0 read-a-thon

I’d like to start by thanking the author of this book for allowing me to have a copy of this book in return for an honest review, through Bostick Communications.

The book was about a teenage girl called Zoe and her family who live in an affluent area in the States. It sees her going form being part of a close nit loving family to everything falling apart when her older brother Josh is shot by a friend Kirk.

The cover art is lovely and I loved the way the story was written in the form of a diary that was kept by the main character, Zoe. If found the book hard to get into at first due to the subject matter, death, murder & suicide, but the authors writing was so good that it got me through the initial awkwardness and had me engrossed. It is for these reasons that I have given it a 5 star rating.

It was interesting seeing all the things that happen to Zoe from the moment her brother is killed, starting to drink (underage), smoke and smoke weed to name but a few.

The fact that the book was done as though it was exerts from Zoe’s diary made me as the reader feel that I connected with Zoe on so many levels as well as with the rest of her family. It also enabled me to see all her strengths and weaknesses as a person.

All in all I loved this book and think it was a grate debut book so I would recommend it to other people as well as give it as a gift to frends/family members who I think would enjoy it,

Review

First of all I’d like to thank Missy – bingereader on you tube for recommending this book on one of her review videos. I am so glad that I purchased it and read it because it’s a fantastic story and an amazing start to what I am sure will be an grate trilogy.

This first book in the trilogy follows an American girl, named Kara and her father who’s a teacher through their first few months in Japan. Where they have moved to for a year for her father to teach following her mothers death.

The cover art is hauntingly evocative, and, Thomas’s writing style and world building skills are fascinating and captivating so leave you wanting more every time you picked it up. This is why I have given the book a five star rating.

Through the author’s writing I could feel Kara and all the other kids at the schools fear when all the murders and nightmares were happening, to the point where I actually felt like I was in the story as well. It also made me feel a strong connection with Karra when she was so determined to find out what why it was all happening even though she was scared to death because if I was in a situation like that I would teat like that to.

All in all I loved this book and can’t wait to read the other two, in fact I intend to read the second book Spirits of the Noh by the end of this month.

Book Review: Doll Bones by Holly Black (via Netgalley)

Doll Bones

Twelve-year-old Zach is too old to play with toys. Or at least, that’s  what his father thinks.

But even though he stops hanging out with Poppy and Alice, stops  playing with his action figures, it’s no good. There’s one toy that still  wants to play with him. A doll that’s made from the bones of a dead  girl.

The only way to end the game is to lay the doll to rest for ever. It’s time  for a journey to Spring Grove cemetery. It’s time to grow up.

Review

I want to start this review by thanking Holly Black the Author and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book. I gave the book 5 stars out of five because I loved the premiss of the story and felt that I connected with the three main characters.

Holly’s writing was fantastic and the development of the characters made the story really immersive. I found the fact that the doll was possessed by the spirit of a dead girl from the 1800’s who just wanted to be put to rest by being buried in her home town.

The three main characters, children 2 girls and the a boy, were really believable and I connected with all of them in different way but particularly with one of the girls. I loved the fact that the kids although they were in middle school were still playing with dolls and action figures which they were using to make up quest based games. It was great that this was actually transferred in to their real life when they travelled to the home town of the doll girl to lay her to rest.

This is a book that I will read again as well as recommend it to others and buy it as a gift for people.

Puppet by Pauline C Harris

Book Synopsis

Puppet: A Retelling of Pinocchio Penelope lives in a world of advanced technology but many claim society has yet to catch up. Marionettes have advanced in the form of robots; lifelike creations remote controlled to perform super human tasks.

When Penelope makes a deal with Jed, a marionette-obsessed scientist, she doesn’t fully realize what she’s getting herself into. In order for Jed to take her away from the orphanage she lives in, she must first agree to undergo his experiments and tests, ultimately creating something no one ever dreamed possible; the first living marionette.

As Jed shows off his scientific creation to the world, concerns arise surrounding Penelope’s abilities and what she’s capable of doing. Ordered to somehow lessen her abilities, Jed makes a desperate attempt to change Penelope to make her more human, more vulnerable. After Penelope lies to the officials about her past, Jed makes sure it’s the last one she’ll ever utter. The truth is now the only thing she is capable of telling.

As Penelope struggles with her past, her disturbingly new present, and her uncertain future, she is thrust into a magically twisted world of mayhem in search of the one thing she wants, but knows she can never have. The chance to be just a girl again. To be normal. To be real.

Review

I was lucky enough to obtain a digital copy of this fantastic book from Netgalley so thank so much for allowing me to get it.

The authors writing is really engrossing and makes you want to keep reading the story. All the character and plot developments in the story enables the reader to be drawn in to the story as well as to develop a strong and empathetic relationship with the main character Penelope (Protagonist) as well as the other two prominent characters Jed (the Scientist) as well as his son James.

Thus is fantastically clever retelling of the children’s fairy story Pinocchio about an orphan girl Penelope who is adopted by a man called Jed, a scientist to become his living Puppet.  At the beginning of this book you see Penelope looking at spending a further few years in the Orphanage where she lives as a result of her wrong doing and we follow her through her journey with Jed finally to being back with Jed after having spent some time locked up with the administrators. All the way through you see her strength as well as her vulnerability along with her lack of trust in people.

I loved this book because it uncovered all the strings that the main three characters had restricting them non more than Penelope. It also made me ask myself what strings I have restricting me in my life.

It is because of all of the above things that I give this book a full 5 stars out of five and would buy it for my self as well as for others.

REVIEW

Thank you to Samantha Lien from JKS Communications as well as netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. I thank NetGalley as well because I couldn’t get on with the version that I received from Samantha due to its PDF formatso I downloaded a copy from NetGalley.

This books cover is absolutely beautiful and I can honestly say that it is the perfect introduction to an absolutely amazing book which is why I have given it 5 stars.

The book started with a bang which kept you wanting more, a man and his son racing home before a snow storm hits and their carriage hits someone. The father is quite happy to leave the person out in the cold and injured but the son insists on going to find him and take him home with them for him to re cooperate. Which is exactly what they do.

Although you don’t know it at the time this man is in fact the person or at least one of the people that the story’s about.

I found it interesting to read about the culture, beliefs and politics of the time, as well as what life was like in Africa.

The twist in the story around the Grandma of the family being the Woman from the story that the Old Man, Masson was telling them was really grate. This was grate because when he was saying about how he had spent the rest of his life travelling to try to find her because she was his true love you felt really sorry for him. But then when it came to pass that the Grandmother was her I felt he could finally be happy at last.

This story was a beautiful one of love, friendship, loyalty, family and adventure. I loved this book so much that there is no doubt that I will recommend it to other people as well as buy it as a gift for others.

REVUEW
I received this book from the Author via Bostick Communications in exchange for an honest review, so thank you so much for allowing me to review this amazingly evocative book.
First of all i’d like to say that the books cover is beautiful and gives an insight into what the story is going to be about. Then once you start reading the writing and descriptions are so clear and concise you can almost feel what each of the characters is feeling and I loved the fact that the story was told from multiple perspectives: Mariyum, Faisel, Murad (rich landlord) & Rubab (Mariyum’s Sister).
The book tells the story of a young Pakistani girls life in a disgraced family of only girls with an alcoholic abusive father. it tells of her falling in love with her childhood friend Faisel who she eventually runs away with to Lahore and the fact that her father basically sells her to the local landlords son as a way of getting some money. The thread running through out it is her desire to better herself through education in order to get a good job so she can provide for her family.
The way the author describes things that happen in the book, especially the severe beatings the main character is  to at the hands of her father, makes you feel like your experiencing them yourself. In fact when Danny was describing the beatings that Maiyum got from her father I could almost every strike of the Caine, every punch, kick etc.
This book will be in my top 20 books for this year therefore I will both recommend it to other people when asked for a book recommendation and purchase it as a gift for people as well. In fact I loved this book so Much that I am sure Danny is going to very quickly going to become one of my favourite authors so much so that i can’t wait to read his other books including The Evil In The Ice (one I have received for review).
AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY
Danny Odato was born in 1953, the youngest of a family of seven in the small town of Controne, Salerno, south of Naples. His passion for writing stems from his early education in a Franciscan monastery, which was stocked with a collection of handwritten manuscripts, some hundreds of years old. He was drawn to a deeper education in philosophy and literature and began writing in his native italian. Today Danny’s talent is at its peak. He credits his second wife for giving him the inspiration and encouragement to continue writing, which has led to his most exciting stories, including his most recent novel, The Witches Revenge.

Book Review: Nearly Mended (no 2 Nearly) by Devon Ashley

First of all thank you to Devon for allowing me to read and review this book. I gave it a 5 stars out of five because it was a fantastic continuation to what I am sure will be a grate series.

I loved this book because it was interesting to see the changes that Megan made to her life with Nick in order to get over what had happened to her when she was taken. Then how she changed her tack when Zander took her again from fighting against her situation to being totally compliant especially when she found that Zander had got Nick.

It was also interesting to see how Nick dealt with what happened to him as well as the changes that happened to Zander from being a mean, nasty bully to being a kind, gentle almost loving person.

When they escaped from Zander’s clutches and went to the police to report everything that had happened to them it was obvious that they were going to be in some kind of police protection for the rest of their lives so they couldn’t be taken again.

I can’t wait to see how the story develops more in the next book.

When Megan was taken again and Zander took her to a “party” which ended up being an auction and where she was violently raped by the houses owner who also was the person who was doing the laser treatments to correct her burn and cut scares. It was shocking to find out that all the time they believed they were safe and no where near Zander, he was not only just down the road from them but he also knew exactly what was happening in their lives because he had had a tracking device implanted in her.

I also liked the fact that Megan had a scare that she was pregnant because she hadn’t had a period for several months but she wasn’t then when Zander took her again she found out why she hadn’t had a period for a while when he told her that he’d made sure she had wouldn’t have a period by giving her a contraceptive jab

I have loved both of the books I have read in this series so far, on my kindle, that I fully intend to but the actual books eventually as well.

Once she hit adolescence and realized playing with dolls wasn’t cool anymore, she started putting her ideas to paper. And she hasn’t stopped since. Mara is more than just a madwoman with a writing box. She lives in the south with her husband and demanding cat. BOOK SYNOPSIS

Seventeen year-old Zelene has never believed in magic or been one to trust fate. Prophecies about princesses and long lost families were the stuff of fairy tales and had no place in her life. But then magic-wielding assassins attack claiming she is one of the five Duillaine Ainnir, the next generation of the most powerful women who rule over the worlds. Together, the five girls are prophesized to save the worlds from the war that has been raging for years.

As their enemies strike, the girls are taken back to their world and discover the ties binding them together. Rhaya has always had an uncanny knack for reading people, but can’t seem to unravel the mystery tying her to Isauria, the new friend she bonded with instantly. For years, Isauria has been dreaming of Terrena, a girl living her life on the run in a magical world ripped apart by the tragedies of war, but Isauria is completely unaware that she is psychically linked to the world she was born in.

Zelene views them all, especially the elders, with a distrustful eye, familial bonds or no. When she learns that her long-lost twin Ariana has been captured by the rebels, Zelene’s attitude changes. She doesn’t know what she can do when her own magic is still locked within her, but can she trust the elders to rescue Ariana when it seems their medieval politics are what brought about the war in the first place? With all that is at stake, the answer becomes clear to Zelene.

Screw the worlds. She’s getting her sister back.

BOOK REVUEW

Thanks Mara for letting me read and review this book. I loved the book and would give it 5 stars.

The story was amazing and the world building,character/scene descriptions were grate as they made me feel like I was actually experiencing what was happening personally.

It was interesting to see how each of the girls (Ariana, Terrena & Isuraia) dealt with coming into their powers as they did so. Especially Isuraia because although it nearly cost her her life it also enabled her to find her youngest sister Ariana.

I also found it fascinating learning about the world the girls came from its culture and customs.

All in all I can’t wait to read the future books in this series as this was a fantastic start to what I am sure will be a grate series.
