The murder of Dr Efrem Pangyui, the Polis diplomat researching the Continent’s past, has begun something and now whispers of an uprising flutter out from invisible corners. Only one woman may be willing to pursue the truth – but it is likely to cost her everything.

Review

The book was about the politics, culture and religious beliefs of a place called the Continent, it is full of love. death (murder), mystery and intrigue.

This book was fantastic although at times it was quite heavy going due to the combination of the cultural, political and historical religious basis of the story.

The authors writing style and world building was great and at times made me the reader feel as though I was actually part of the story, which made the story even more intriguing. Shara the main character in the story was a very interesting, well educated, strong willed, gentle and loving person who was able to see things for what they were; and because of this was a character I really felt a connection to.

I will read this book again as well as recommend it to others and buy it as a gift for friends/family who I think will enjoy it which is why I gave the book a 4 star rating.

Review

This book was really great as it gave you background on some of the characters that the reader got to know in the first book (Birthday, “I wandered lonely as a cloud” and Veronica) and the first story in the book introduced the reader to a character that we will meet in one of the books following “The end of all things”.

In the Story entitled Veronica we learned about the background story of the little girl that we are introduced to at the end of the first book while the story entitled “I wander lonely as a cloud” was about Shadowfax (Cloud) the horse that Carly and Justin found in the early stages of their journey.

The story entitled Birthday gave the reader an insight into what life was like for Carly and Justin once they had settled in a house that they found on their travel route when she was pregnant which was very interesting.

While in the first story Horsemen introduced the reader to a character called Pearl who will obviously be in one of the future books in this series and it was very interesting finding out what her life had been like prior to the Infection and in the early stages of the crisis.

The authors writing style and world building in this book is as good as it was in The End of all things is still as good and kept me hooked throughout my reading. I would also read it again as well as reccommend it to others who are reading the series. It is because of all of this that I am giving the book 5 star rating

Bloggingforbooks: Bonita Avenue by Peter Buwalda

Dazzling…Critics hailed Buwalda as ‘The Dutch answer to Jonathan Franzen’, but his  brilliance is entirely unique.”–The Times (UK)

Siem Sigerius is a beloved, brilliant professor of mathematics with a promising future in politics. His  family—including a loving wife, two gorgeous, intelligent stepdaughters and a successful future son-  in-law—and carefully appointed home in the bucolic countryside complete the portrait of a  comfortable, morally upright household. But there are elements of Siem’s past that threaten to upend  the peace and stability that he has achieved, and when he stumbles upon a deception that’s painfully  close to home, things begin to fall apart. A cataclysmic explosion in a fireworks factory, the advent of  internet pornography, and the reappearances of a discarded, dangerous son all play a terrible role in  the spectacular fragmentation of the Sigerius clan.

A riveting portrait of a family in crisis and the ways that even the smallest twists of fate can forever  change our lives, Bonita Avenue is an incendiary, unpredictable debut of relationships torn asunder  by lies, and minds destroyed by madness.

The Long Road by G Michael Hopf  – NetGalley

The End was just the beginning of the new world…

Only six weeks have passed since a super-EMP attack devastated the United States, but already, life has changed dramatically. Most of America has become  a wasteland filled with starving bands of people, mobs and gangs. Millions are dead and millions more are suffering, with no end in sight.
For Gordon, Samantha, Sebastian, Cruz and Barone, the turmoil and chaos they dealt with in the early weeks after the attack will seem trivial in comparison to the collapse of society that plays out before their eyes. Uncertainty abounds as they all travel different paths in search of a safe place to call home. The only thing that is definite is that The Long Road will take its toll on all of them.

The Last Savanna by Mike Bond – netgalley )

As ivory poachers are gunning down Africa’s last elephants, former SAS officer Ian MacAdam leads a commando squad against them. He embarks on a desperate trek to save not only Rebecca but his own soul in an Africa torn apart by wars, overpopulation and the slaughter of its last wildlife. Based on the author’s own experiences pursuing elephant poachers in the wilds of East Africa, The Last Savanna is an intense personal memoir of humanity’s ancient heartland, the beauty of its perilous deserts, jungles, and savannas, and the deep, abiding power of love.

Ego Trip by Glynn Harrison – NetGalley (bout of books read-a thon)

In The Big Ego Trip, psychiatrist Glynn Harrison takes aim at one of Western society’s most entrenched ideologies: self-esteem. He charts the rise of this ubiquitous value, arguing that the ‘science’ underlying it is flawed, that there is little evidence efforts to promote self-esteem work, and that, in its popular form of ‘boosterism,’ self-esteem promotion comes with hazardous and unwanted side effects. Furthermore, he explores whether there is a more biblically and psychologically secure approach to big questions of significance and worth. You will be intrigued, challenged, and quite possibly freed by Dr. Harrison’s conclusion: Compared with the failed ideology of self-esteem, the gospel offers the ultimate ‘bigger-than-your-ego’ trip.

The Troop by Nick Calter – NetGalley (bout of books read-a-thon)

Before the night is through, this stranger will end up infecting one of the troop’s own with a bioengineered horror that’s straight out of their worst nightmares. Now stranded on the island with no communication to the outside world, the troop learns to battle much more than the elements, as they are pitted against something nature never intended…and eventually each other.

Oh yes, and for the lady I told you about. I don’t think I mentioned it before, but the third time she tried to take her own life, she succeeded.” He pulled the trigger.

The first book in the gripping ‘Hotel St Kilda’ series by Michael Knaggs transports the reader to a community under constant threat from a brutal gang, led by three brothers. When these men are lured to an isolated street and shot dead by a mysterious stranger, the subsequent euphoria on the estate where they lived is picked up by the national press.

Catalyst follows the crusade of Tom Brown, MP for the Opposition Party and champion of law and order, who is forced to put everything on the line, including his relationship with his wife, to implement a controversial New Justice Regime. He receives strong support from his Party colleagues and a local campaigner, George Holland, who travels the country to rally the support for radical change.

When the killer is eventually caught, the gang sets out for revenge, targeting George for his outspoken condemnation of their activities and uncompromising proposals for their demise. They descend in large numbers on the quiet village where he lives, armed and ready to kill, and the resulting event is dubbed ‘The Meadow Village Massacre’ across the national papers.

Catalyst builds from an opening sequence based on a short story penned by the author over fifty years ago. The saga of Hotel St Kilda will continue in the second book of the series, Heaven’s Door, and features a climax which has its roots in a separate short story. The narrative is a linking of these two events, and whilst purely a work of fiction, provides a vehicle for the author to express a number of personal issues on law and order.

The Ocean at the End of The Lane by Neil Gaimen –  Sci. -Fi. and fantasy Book club group

The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Sussex, England. A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn’t thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she’d claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy.

Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie—magical, comforting, wise beyond her years—promised to protect him, no matter what.

A groundbreaking work from a master, The Ocean at the End of the Laneis told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out. It is a stirring, terrifying, and elegiac fable as delicate as a butterfly’s wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark.(

Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi –  Sci. -Fi. and fantasy Book club group

Jack Holloway works alone. Hundreds of miles from ZaraCorp’s headquarters on planet, 178 light-years from the corporation’s headquarters on Earth, Jack is content as an independent contractor. As for his past, that’s not up for discussion. Then, in the wake of an accidental cliff collapse, Jack discovers a seam of unimaginably valuable jewels, to which he manages to lay legal claim just as ZaraCorp is cancelling their contract with him for his part in causing the collapse. Briefly in the catbird seat, legally speaking, Jack pressures ZaraCorp into recognizing his claim, and cuts them in as partners to help extract the wealth. But there’s another wrinkle to ZaraCorp’s relationship with the planet Zarathustra. Their entire legal right to exploit the verdant Earth-like planet is based on being able to certify to the authorities on Earth that Zarathustra is home to no sentient species. Then a small furry biped – trusting, appealing, and ridiculously cute – shows up at Jack’s outback home. Followed by its family. As it dawns on Jack that despite their stature, these are people, he begins to suspect that ZaraCorp’s claim to a planet’s worth of wealth is very flimsy indeed…and that ZaraCorp may stop at nothing to eliminate the “fuzzys” before their existence becomes more widely known.
