Three Dark Crowns (Threel Dark Crowns #1) by Kendare Blake

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three Three Dark Crowns (Untitled, #1)queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.

What I think so far: At the moment I am 28% of the way through the book (Chapter 7 Gravesdrake Manor) and although I found the first couple of chapters slow going which is why although I started it in May I am still reading it now (3/9), but having got past that point now I am really enjoying it. The characters and plot are developing well and in a thoroughly believable way. The writers writing style is really captivating.
It is for these reasons that I would give it a four.5 star rating and am looking forward to the next book in the series as well all future books in the series. To find out what my final rating and views of the book are then look out for my review once I have finished it by the end of next week.

 Still Here by Lara Vapnyar

A profound and dazzlingly entertaining novel from the writer Louis Still HereMenand calls “Jane Austen with a Russian soul”

In her warm, absorbing and keenly observed new novel, Lara Vapnyar follows the intertwined lives of four immigrants in New York City as they grapple with love and tumult, the challenges of a new home, and the absurdities of the digital age.

Vica, Vadik, Sergey and Regina met in Russia in their school days, but remained in touch and now have very different American lives. Sergey cycles through jobs as an analyst, hoping his idea for an app will finally bring him success. His wife Vica, a medical technician struggling to keep her family afloat, hungers for a better life. Sergey’s former girlfriend Regina, once a famous translator is married to a wealthy startup owner, spends her days at home grieving over a recent loss. Sergey’s best friend Vadik, a programmer ever in search of perfection, keeps trying on different women and different neighborhoods, all while pining for the one who got away.

As Sergey develops his app—calling it “Virtual Grave,” a program to preserve a person’s online presence after death—a formidable debate begins in the group, spurring questions about the changing perception of death in the modern world and the future of our virtual selves. How do our online personas define us in our daily lives, and what will they say about us when we’re gone?

What I think so far: I found most of the first Chapter slow going because it seemed so information dense and I hadn’t got any kind of connection with any of the characters yet. However now I am part way through the second chapter I am beginning to get into it a little more because the characters are starting to unfurl a little more and I am beginning to get into the authors rating style a little more, having said that though the journeys still out on it.
For the above reasons and the fact that I think periodically it will be quite information dense currently I would give the book a 3.25-4 star rating but watch out for my review when I finish the book at the end of next week.

What I Think so far:  I am currently a little under 1/2 way through this book and am really enjoying it. The concept of shape shifting bird people living on boats i and the fact that some of the children of these people being kidnapped sometimes by humans or as they refer to them drowmers is an inspired one.
It was interesting to read about how life on earth effects our main character Aza Ray in that she is dying by drowning and the difference she notices when she wakes up aboard Magonia.
At the moment I would give the book a five star rating and I hope to finish this book by the end of next week so look out for my review to how I rate it and what I say about it.

What I think So far: I am currently only on pg 41 (chapter 4) in this book but I am really enjoying it and feel that I great advancement on from the first book in the series. I can already tell that Rachel is going to remain the Kick ass strong person she was in the first book and I can’t wait to see how she develops further in future books.
As it stands at the moment I would give this book a five star rating as I did the first book so Keep your eyes open for my review as I hope to finish this book by the Monday/Tuesday of the week commencing 12.

This delightfully charming and saucy Regency era romance, is first in The Governess Was Wicked (Governess, #1)the Governess series in which three best friends are employed as governesses for different families, and all find themselves wanting something they can’t have.

As the visits from the dashing and handsome Doctor Edward Fellows become more frequent, Elizabeth quickly sees through the lovesick girls’ ruse. Yet even Elizabeth can’t help but notice Edward’s bewitching bedside manner even as she tries to convince herself that someone of her station would not make a suitable wife for a doctor. What I think so far: I have just nearly started this book (only read the first chapter) but I am really enjoying it, because although it is ultimately going to be a steamy historical romance where the main characters are obviously attracted to each other from the beginning there is also a strong base story line as well. From what I have read so far the author has researched the historical period well then translated it in to the book in a believable way. I am looking forward to seeing how the plot and characters develop as I read further as its a fairy short book at only 1
At the moment I would give it a five star rating but look out for my review when I have finished it by the end of the Week Commencing 12 Sept.

What I think so far: Although this book started off slow I am now nearly half way through chapter 2 and I think this book is probably going to be the best book so far in the series for me. I am fascinated about the plot line of this book being based around witch craft particularly black magic so I can’t wait to see how the author develops the plot line so it keeps me intrigued. The only negative thing I can say about this book at the moment is one that would aim at all the other books and that is that the chapters seem to have a tendency of being sightly long.
Currently I would give this book a five star rating because the writing is really good but if you are interested in knowing my final star rating and views on the book then look out for my review which will be posted by the end of the month.
